Nanit - The Baby Monitor That Thinks

OK, so starting this post was overwhelming for me because there are SO MANY REASONS that I love the Nanit and I don’t even know where to begin or how clearly to stress to you that when it comes to baby monitors, Nanit is the ONLY choice!

When becoming a new parent (or even a second or third time parent) we have our checklist of must-have items for baby’s arrival. Yes, it’s true that in reality as long as you have a car seat (to get home), a few onesies, diapers, and something for baby to sleep in…you really don’t need anything else! But let’s be real, no one is letting that happen. There is a list of absolute essentials and a baby monitor is one of them.

When I was pregnant with Mila, I started my baby registry early on (I was so excited). The baby monitor was one of my top necessities and I did tons of research on just about EVERYTHING I put on my registry. What became clear to me in my research was that there was truly no better monitor out there than the Nanit Monitor. Hands down, the Nanit was the superior monitor across all available options and I had to have it! Of the MANY reasons this monitor is the best, here’s what was most important to me:

Modern Technology

Nanit is renowned for its cutting-edge technology, which is really what sets it apart from other baby monitors on the market. As a modern-day parent we should be using modern-day products and technologies! The Nanit utilizes a high-definition camera allowing you to monitor your baby with a super clear view FROM YOUR PHONE! It offers a crystal-clear live feed, even in low-light conditions so you have real-time visibility of your baby day or night. The fact that it connects to your cell phone is a feature that you expect from just about any product these days but it’s amazing how many monitors don’t offer that capability! Now, not only can I watch my baby clearly from my couch, but I can also watch her when I’m out on date night with my husband or at girls night out. I always have that confidence in knowing that she’s safe and well and sleeping soundly, which always gives me peace of mind when I leave her in the evenings. I can even check in and look at her if I’m away on a girls weekend and need a little dose of my baby girl. The technology was 100% the biggest selling point.

Real-Time Notifications:

The other feature I loved was the real-time notifications, and this has been THE mostly used feature for me since Mila was born.  The Nanit sends you alerts on your phone for events such as sound or motion detection, ensuring you know exactly what’s going on, even if you can’t necessarily hear them. Particularly when we moved Mila into her own room, I was so nervous about not hearing her cry in the night and being able to go in and help her. Turning on the real-time notifications (or leaving the sound on the monitor) helped ease my worries and be able to react promptly when she began to cry. Another one of the real-time notifications is for temperature, letting you know when baby’s room is getting out of the ideal room temperature. I love this feature because in the colder months, even if I didn’t necessarily feel cold, I’d receive an alert if her room got below 68 degrees so I could turn on the heater and ensure her room stayed warm enough and allowed her to continue sleeping soundly. The notifications are GREAT.

Smart Insights and Analytics:

One of Nanit's standout features is its smart insights and analytics. Using advanced computer vision technology, Nanit tracks and analyzes your baby's sleep patterns, providing valuable insights into their sleep habits. It’s super cool! Especially as you sleep train and are working on getting baby to sleep throughout the night and without visitations, you can look back and monitor their progress and it helps support the hard work you’ve put in with sleep training and it seriously gives you pride in knowing how far they (and you) have come. You'll receive detailed sleep reports, including sleep duration, sleep quality, wake-up times, and even your nighttime visits, which helps you make informed decisions about your baby's sleep routine and helps to identify sleep regressions or other issues such as teething.

Two-Way Audio and Background Audio:

So this one isn’t something I use as much as I thought I would but the Nanit allows you to communicate with your baby through its two-way audio feature. Whether you're in the next room or away from home, you can speak to your little one (or whoever is with them in the nursery - changing diapers or getting them dressed) and speak to them without even making a call. The idea of using it to soothe Mila when she was upset never really happened for us but I know that some parents use it to help soothe baby by letting them hear their voice. What I do use the audio for is to hear the audio coming from the nursery. For the first year of her life, I probably had the audio turned on my at every moment while Mila was in bed. Not only can the audio play while you’re in the app but you can also play it as background audio when using other apps (or not even using your phone at all). It is such a useful feature! We kept Mila home with us for the first 18 months (no daycare or nanny) so we would both be working while she was napping during the day. The background audio was a game changer for ensuring we heard her when she woke up from her naps and could go and get her, especially since we oftentimes weren’t close enough to the nursery to hear her awake.

Easy Travel Setup:

We got the Nanit Travel Pack along with the Nanit Pro with Floor Stand because we knew we’d be doing plenty of traveling. It has made things so easy! I literally just pop the camera square off of the floorstand at home and into the travel case which already has the Flex Stand and chord. It’s compact and easy to drop into our suitcase. Setup is super simple! I take it to friend’s or family’s houses so I can watch her during naptime or on vacations and weekend getaways. The setup is a snap and we’re in action immediately. It’s a must for anyone who plans to travel or do naps away from the house.

Breathing Wear Technology:

Nanit’s breathing wear is pretty freaking impressive. One of your biggest worries as a new parent is your baby’s well-being, especially when it comes to things like SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). The term has more recently been updated to SUIDS because it’s unexplained (sudden unexplained infant death syndrome). The fact that it’s unexplained is very unnerving for parents and can cause a lot of stress and anxiety. In recent years there have been technologies released to help you monitor your baby’s breathing so you’re alerted to their breathing and can react if baby stops breathing but the solutions have been less than ideal. For example, the Owlet sock has to be worn on their foot or the Angelcare Monitor that sits underneath the baby’s mattress. I was never interested in placing any technologies onto my baby’s skin or deal with an overly sensitive mattress pad. The Nanit uses the camera to watch a pattern on the baby’s swaddle, sleepstack, or pajamas to track their breathing and send alerts through the smartphone alerts feature. WAY more ideal. We couldn’t use the breathing wear for the first 5 months because Mila slept in The SNOO bassinet which doesn’t work with the Nanit because of its constant rocking motion, so although we used the sleep sacks for a while once Mila moved into the crib, I felt a lot more confident about her sleep by then and was less concerned about SIDS and her breathing. But I was glad I had the option!
